A South Korean woman managed to obtain her driver’s license after 960 attempts and spending over US$14,000 retaking the tests.
At 68 years old, Cha Sa-Soon explained that she had postponed the process of getting her license because she was “too busy raising her children.” In 2005, she took the theoretical test for the first time but, unfortunately, did not pass.
However, she did not give up. After taking what amounted to a test “every day, five days a week for three years,” she finally passed. The next step was the practical test, which presented many more obstacles.
Sa-Soon ended up taking an impressive total of 960 exams in her attempt to get her driver’s license. During this period, it is believed she spent over US$14,000 to take all the tests, not including driving lessons.
But why was she so persistent in obtaining her license? Sa-Soon explained that she needed her own vehicle to support her vegetable-selling business, as well as transportation to take her grandchildren to the zoo.
When she finally passed the test, everyone was very excited, including the staff at the Jeonbuk driving school. “We all cheered and hugged her, giving her flowers,” said Sa-Soon’s instructor to The New York Times.
As proof that good things come to those who wait, after hearing about Sa-Soon passing her test on her 960th attempt, South Korean automaker Hyundai gave her a new car worth around US$15,000.
